Why Meditate?
It’s not just in our heads! There are now thousands of studies showing the positive impact of meditation and mindfulness on our health and well-being. But you don’t have to go out and do the research – we’ve made it simple! Read on to uncover the science behind meditation and its benefits.

For Better Zzz’s
Better sleep at night – and more dreams – bring life to your days.

Sleep isn’t just relaxation for eight hours a day – it’s essential to our cognitive functioning. Meditation gives you all sorts of benefits, like enhanced REM sleep and increased levels of melatonin.1

Turns out it can even help serious sleep problems. Researchers wanted to see if mindfulness meditation would benefit those struggling with chronic insomnia. After eight weeks, those in the meditation training had less total wake time during the night, were more relaxed before going to bed, and reduced the severity of their sleep problems. Plus, in a follow up six months later, the insomnia sufferers had maintained a better quality of sleep.2

To Stress Less
Less stress means more happiness!

It’s a little-known secret that Wall Street execs, famous artists, and Silicon Valley whiz kids are some of the biggest advocates of meditation as a way to manage stress.
A 2005 study at Harvard Medical School found that meditation increases the thickness of your prefrontal cortex, the area of your brain associated with attention and self-awareness.3
Furthermore, we now know it even reduces employee stress and burnout. A study on teachers at a school for children with severe behavioral problems who were treated to a Transcendental Meditation program had less stress, less depression, and overall lower burnout than other teachers. Read more…

AIGA PDX: The Sign Painters Movie

Typography may have recently been relegated to computers, but it was once the terrain of skilled artists. Our own city of Portland is lucky to be the host this year of the Society of Typographic Aficionados annual five day conference celebrating all that is unique and beautiful about type. In conjunction with their workshops and other events, AIGA will be screening “Sign Painters,” a documentary by filmmakers Faythe Levine and Sam Macon. As recently as the 1980’s, storefronts and street signs were all hand lettered with brush and paint. As die cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printing has ushered a creeping sameness into the landscape, there is a growing trend to seek out the traditional practitioners.

AIGA PDX: Band Studio Tour

Want a dose of passion and drive this summer? We’re lucky to spend our August studio tour with the newly formed Band. A year-young hybrid group of thinkers, creators, artists, graphic designers, illustrators, printmakers, woodworkers, welders and more, Band’s work can be seen all over Portland in a variety of media from websites to restaurant branding. Their style stands out with its freshness and clarity, and love for creating something both beautiful and cohesive. Band is proof that, as owner (there are two) Zach Yarrington says, “if you work hard and be nice to people, achieving your dreams is closer than you think.”
